The Hermitage, Sale Green

The Hermitage is an extension and retro-fit project on an existing 1960's property in Sale Green. The clients wanted to upgrade their poorly insulated house and improve the aesthetics and appearance from the road through the demolition of the former garage.

Externally, the modest extensions are shown to have minimal impact on the existing house but are transformative all round. The new two storey extension has a ridge line much lower than the existing so that it does not dominate the existing house. The new design is externally insulated to improve the thermal efficiency and the existing plastic cladding is removed and replaced with new composite cladding. This cladding is wrapped around the front of the house to unify the elevations whilst responding to its local context, for example the ground floor is to be rendered like many of the other properties in Sale Green.
