Planning approved for a new dwelling built into a sloping site
15th September 2023 -
We have received planning approval for the construction of a partially subterranean dwelling. The site location and surrounding context provided a unique design challenge when coming up with a scheme for a new 2-storey dwelling. Due to the close proximity of surrounding houses we had to consider the visual impact of the new house on the current residents. After numerous designs and pre-application submissions a design naturally evolved around building into the slope of the site in order to get a 2-storey dwelling with the appearance of a single storey structure. A green roof provides a reduced visual impact from first floor windows of the surrounding houses while also assisting with surface water drainage on the site. Getting natural light into the dwelling is achieved by a large glazed south elevation inspired by the HUF HAUS design and use of rooflights in key spaces. The terraced garden allows natural light to flood the lower ground floor habitable rooms whilst also providing privacy.
We are now preparing the technical drawings for construction and building regulations applications. The new house will be constructed from Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF) and clad externally with brick, vertical timber cladding and aluminium profiles.
